which he tried to take back, but elections
showing support for an independent
government were finally held in 1943.
The Lebanese National Pact came into force in
1943 with a 6:5 ratio favoring Christians in
representation based on the 1932 census.
The French really did not want to leave this
area.
No new agreement was negotiated until the
1990 Taif Accord signed in Saudi Arabia
