The Naval Academy recycles through many different program. General recycling is done through MWR Recycling Team located at the Recycling Center, Building 803, Alder Road, Naval Station (293-3049). In conjunction with the custodial contractor, MWR collects the recyclable items from both Bancroft Hall and Office Buildings. MWR also collects residential recyclables, pallets, scrap metal, toner cartridges, plastics, books, oil, tires, and 55 gallon drums.
 
 

Bancroft Hall Recycling Program

    Bancroft Hall Recycling Program involves the midshipmen that live in Bancroft Hall. The recycled items include Paper, Aluminum, Newspaper, Glass, Plastic, and Cardboard. The recycling procedures are discussed below: 

PAPER: Recyclable paper is to be placed in the blue bins in each midshipmen room. These bins should be emptied into the company bins. These bins should then be dumped into the designated location at each wing. A list of acceptable/not acceptable paper products are listed below. 

  • Acceptable: white paper (any ink color), white stationery (letterhead), white business forms, colored report cover folders, computer paper, colored paper, fax paper, white machine copies, magazines, books, envelopes (with or without windows).
  • Not Acceptable: carbon paper and self carbon forms, cardboard, waxed papers, blueprint papers, plastic coated paper, plastic coated envelopes, food wrappers, tissues, napkins, towels, brown paper bags. 
ALUMINUM CANS: Plastic bins with wheels are provided in each company. These bins must be emptied in the aluminum can trailers located around Bancroft Hall (see map). 

NEWSPAPER: Individual Companies collect newspaper at their own desired schedule. Newspapers should then be brought to the paper bins at each wing (see map). 

GLASS AND PLASTIC: Place items in new hallway glass and plastic bins. Theses items should then be bagged and put in the aluminum can trailers (see map). 

CARDBOARD: Cardboard must be broken down flat and stacked next to paper bins (see map)on Wednesdays. 
 
 

Naval Academy Residential Curbside Recycling

Recycling Trailer    Residential Curbside recycling collects the same recyclables as discussed above. Collection is done at the Naval Academy Complex on Tuesday trash day and Naval Station is done on Friday trash day. All items should be placed in the navy blue plastic bins. To obtain a bin call Dave Holtzman at 293-9202. 
 
 

Other MWR Recycling:

Pallets: Pallets are collected at Supply and/or can be collected by the Rigging Office through the Public Works Service Desk (392-4594). Pallets are then brought to the Recycling Center. 

Scrap Metal: Scrap Steel collection points are located at the Supply Yard and at Perry Center (corner of King George and Rt. 450).

Oil: Collection through MWR is restricted to oil from the auto hobby shop and the YP s. However, see oil collection note below for residential oil collection at the Navy Exchange Gas Station. 

Toner Cartridges: Toner cartridges should be placed in the box from the new cartridge and placed in with the paper recycling in the office area. MWR sorts the paper and will pull the cartridge out for recycling. 

Plastics: Plastics should be bagged separately and put with the aluminum collection bins. MWR is purchasing recycling trailers soon to be placed around the yard to facilitate plastic collection. 

Cardboard: Cardboard should be stacked next to paper collection boxes in office area or at paper collection points. 

Books: For recycling books or any large amount of paper, call the Recycling Center at 293-3049. 

Tires: The Naval Academy will be initiating a new tire recycling program. The program will be permitted thru the state of Maryland and operated by MWR. Tire collection will be at MWR Recycling Center only. All tires will be placed in a designated roll-off. Until further notice, tires will continue to be collected at the Perry Center and Supply Yard collection locations. 

55 Gallon Drums: Both good and non-reusable empty drums are collected at the MWR Recycling Center.
