Hazardous Waste Program    The Hazardous Waste Program is managed by the Public Works Department Environmental Division. The Hazardous Waste Program includes the storage, transportation, disposal and tracking of all the hazardous waste generated at the Naval Academy Complex. The waste is collected and stored in four Haz-Mat buildings called "Less than 90 Day" sites. The waste is profiled and disposed of via a contract thru a Hazardous Waste Broker. The waste is shipped by truck to a pre-approved Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility. The trucking company must have a permit to haul hazardous waste. A hazardous waste manifest is used as a shipping and tracking document. The Naval Academy is liable for the waste forever. The Hazardous Waste Program Manager audits the disposal Facility yearly for compliance.

STEPS FOR DISPOSAL:

1. Waste Identification: MSDS sheet or users knowledge. If this is not available, Environmental Hazardous Waste Program Manger will assist.

2. Call the above point of contacts or fax an inventory of the material to be disposed.

3. The Hazardous Waste Program Manager will determine the best method of disposal.

COMMON QUESTIONS:

1. What about unopened Hazardous Material that I do not need any longer? This is not a hazardous waste and must be turned into supply for reissue. Contact Mac McCord at 293-9299 for assistance.

2. What about oil or antifreeze? Oil and antifreeze can be brought to the NEX gas station at the Naval Station for disposal.

3. What about hazardous waste from my house? Anne Arundel County provides a free drop-off service approximately eight times a year. Call the Naval Academy Hazardous Waste Program Manager for the dates and location.
