CLEAN UP PROGRAM

Program Manager: Robert Cole, (410) 293-1116 (mailto:rcole@usna.edu)

The Naval Academy Clean Up Program includes the Navy's Installation Restoration (IR) program for historical contamination and Spill Response for any future releases.

The IR mission is to assess and clean up landfills and dumpsites that already exist. The Naval Academy's IR program is handled through Engineering Field Activity Chesapeake and funded by the Defense Environmental Restoration Account. With only one IR site located at the NEX complex, the site has been designated a low priority and will be funded in the out years.

SPILL RESPONSE

Part of the mission of the U.S. Naval Academy is to ensure that our waters and lands are kept free from pollutants. Despite the hard work of our sailors, midshipman, and staff, accidents happen and spills occur. In order to reduce the potential impacts of any hazardous material spills, the U.S. Naval Academy Environmental Division has teamed up with the U.S. Naval Academy Fire Department and the Naval Station Sailors to form a Hazardous Substance Spill Response Team.

Spill Team

This team has partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard to handle Oil and Hazardous Material spill both on land and on the water. Equipped with spill booms, an oil skimmer, and hazardous material trailers, the Hazardous Substance Spill Response Team is ready to respond to the worst case scenarios.
